The Story Behind the Work

I grew up a long way from the world Richie Rich inhabited, which perhaps explains why I found it so irresistible. I remember the comics, and later Macaulay Culkin’s portrayal in the 1994 film, with their magnificent estates, improbable inventions, and a boy whose every whim could become reality; I could scarcely imagine such wealth, though I had no difficulty imagining what I might do with it. What fascinated me more than his fortune was an almost inexhaustible appetite for adventure, coupled with the innocence to believe that anything was possible.

In Blowing Money, he stands above his mansion against a wall of hundred-dollar bills, blowing a bubble stamped with dollar signs, the whole 48” × 30” canvas finished in diamond dust and high-gloss resin, materials that seemed particularly appropriate for a young millionaire. Age has made the irony of Richie Rich more poignant, for despite possessing everything a child could desire, he still sought friendship, affection, and simple pleasures. I gave him the bubble because bubbles, like fortunes, are most beautiful in the instant before anyone can say how long they will last.
